Maud Hunt Squire [aka Miss Skeene] (artist) and Ethel Mars [aka Miss Furr] (artist) met while art school students, sometime before 1906. They both forged distinguished careers in book illustration, painting, and woodblock printing. Gertrude Stein immortalized Squire and Mars in her early word portrait, “Miss Furr and Miss Skeene” (1908-11).
Result: In 1906, they lived together in Paris. They reveled in the social freedoms that Paris offered, but eventually Europe and settled in Vence on the French Riviera. During World War II, Maud and Ethel, then in their sixties, went into hiding near Grenoble. After the war, they returned to their home in Vence. Squire died in 1955; Mars in 1956. They are buried together in Vence.
We will be having a “No Gas March” from 6 to 7 PM downtown on N 14th Street or North Main Street in McAllen. If you want to use your feet, bikes, non-electric scooters, skateboards, skates, anything is welcome so long as it does not require fossil fuels. We will march to Archer Park where we’ll have an earth-friendly pachanga with free food, live music, and live art. If you are a musician or an artist, please come by! We’re open to anyone joining in. We will also be collecting signatures for a letter/petition to give to our local upper-valley leaders on Monday.
The reason I urge y’all to either get involved with the event, spread the word, or just go for a little while is because here in the valley our calls for moving away from fossil fuels have not been loud enough to reach our city leader’s ears. This event is our opportunity to let them know loud and clear the direction we want our community to move in. The cleaner direction (duh)!

Lawmakers in Florida are pushing for domestic partnerships to be recognized in the state, though voters added a ban on recognizing same-sex relationships to the state constitution.
The Tallahassee Democrat reports that a bill has been introduced in the Florida legislature’s two chambers by two Democrats, Rep. Mark Pafford of West Palm Beach and Sen. Eleanor Sobel of Hollywood. Opponents say the law prohibits anything “substantially equivalent” to marriage, and that domestic partnerships would go too far toward that status — even though they are already recognized in some localities and by the state university system.
Come on, Florida! I’d really, really love to be able to be in an acknowledged relationship in my home state. Have a heart.
